Vitosha rises directly south of Sofia as a rounded, dome-shaped massif 278 km² across, topped by Cherni Vrah at 2,290 m. It’s a proper mountain — snowy in winter, alpine above the treeline in summer — but everything about it is unusually close to the city. You can be on the gondola at Simeonovo, on the ridge for lunch, and back for dinner in Sofia’s centre. The whole massif has been Bulgaria’s Vitosha Nature Park since 1934, protecting old-growth conifer forests, stone rivers and highland meadows.

The classic Vitosha base. Gondola from Simeonovo, chairlifts inside Aleko itself. Fastest route to Cherni Vrah and centre of the ski scene in winter.
Alternate chairlift into the northern face. Direct trails to Golden Bridges and the Bay Krastyo shelter.
Gateway to Boyana Waterfall and the UNESCO Boyana Church. Forested climbs through pine woodland to Kopitoto.
Quiet southern approaches used by locals. Longer walk-ins through open terrain and karst caves — the wildest side of the mountain.
At 2,290 m, Cherni Vrah is Bulgaria’s fourth-highest peak but the easiest of the tall ones to reach. From Aleko the ridge is a rounded, open plateau — panorama of Sofia one way, Rila the other. Snow lingers into May but the trail is well-marked year-round.
Zlatnite Mostove — the Golden Bridges — is a spectacular field of huge granite boulders spread down the mountainside like a river. It’s one of Europe’s largest stone rivers and one of the most photographed spots on Vitosha. Approach from Dragalevtsi or Boyana on well-worn trails.
Below the treeline, dense spruce and beech forests roll all the way down to Sofia’s western districts. Boyana Waterfall drops 15 m through the trees on the western edge; the surrounding trails are a favourite of Sofia locals in every season.

Right at the top of the Aleko gondola at 1,810 m, next to the ski slopes and the classic route to Cherni Vrah. The main Vitosha base for skiing and summer hiking.
Set in pine forest above Boyana, close to the waterfall trail. A quiet forest base with easy paths to Kopitoto and the upper ridges.
On the mid-slope above Dragalevtsi at 1,320 m — a natural base for the classic hike to Golden Bridges and the stone rivers.
Perched high on the eastern shoulder of the massif at 1,780 m. Access to the eastern ridges and quieter approaches to Cherni Vrah.
The city mountain never really closes — the gondola runs summer and winter and the forests reward every season.

Ski season at Aleko. Vitosha’s slopes are the closest ski runs to Sofia — often skied on lunch breaks.
Mud and snowmelt above 1,800 m, but the lower forests and stone rivers are lush and empty.

Weather changes quickly above the treeline and afternoon storms are common in summer. Wind exposure on Cherni Vrah is high — dress a layer warmer than in the city.
