Pamporovo sits high in the central Rhodopes, midway between Smolyan and Chepelare, at around 1,620–1,650 metres. It’s smaller than Bansko or Borovets and softer in character — rolling forested slopes rather than sharp alpine ones. Snezhanka Peak (1,926 m), crowned by its TV tower, is the resort’s visual anchor and the finish line of the main hiking ridge. Sunshine, pine forest and slower travel — that’s the Pamporovo formula.
The main ski area spreads across the slopes below Snezhanka, with more than 25 km of runs — broad beginner pistes, gentle blues, and steeper reds off the top. Ski schools operate all winter, the lift system is compact and quick, and snow reliability is good from mid-December to late March. Aleko in Vitosha may feel closer to Sofia, but Pamporovo is where Bulgarian families come to learn.
